You have an Unexpected Air Conditioner Repair. Now What?

AC repair

An unexpected AC repair during the hot summer months can become a burden to you and your family.

Here we will go over some of the common causes of AC malfunctions and their solutions.

Common AC Problems And Possible Solutions To Fix Them

While there are some causes of your AC having problems that you can fix yourself, some things will best be left to a professional. Here are some reasons that your AC may be having trouble and how to fix them.

Blowing Hot Air

An inconvenient but common problem during the hotter months is when your AC unit blows hot air. A simple issue may be occurring if your AC unit is not blowing cold air.

First, you’ll want to check that your thermostat settings and batteries are working correctly. If they have died, replace them or reset the thermostat and see if that resolves the issue. If the settings and batteries are good, check your circuit breaker. If you notice it has tripped, reset it by turning it on and then off.

Strange Smells & Sounds

Strange smells coming from your air conditioner may simply be caused by your unit not being run for a long period. That is most likely the cause if the smell dissipates quickly. Clean your AC before turning it on after a dormant period. If you smell any gas or burning, always contact an HVAC professional for help.

Odd sounds are not something to ignore in your AC as this can indicate a deeper problem. If this is left ignored large issues such as electrical problems can occur. This issue can get worse so contacting a professional is recommended.

A Leak Around Your AC System

Your AC unit not only cools down a space but also removes moisture from the air. If you’re seeing leaks inside or outside your unit, it’s a sign that maintenance is needed. Clogged drains are one reason your AC may be leaking.

Check that your condensate pump is reducing the amount of water inside and that your condensate drain line is free from clogs or blockages.

Doesn’t Turn On

You may be able to fix an AC unit that is not turning on by following the same steps above as when it is blowing hot air. If you still have no luck getting your unit to turn on, contact a professional.

Frozen Coil

If debris builds up it may cause your evaporator coil to freeze. This is because your unit is not receiving enough air to function normally.

Fixing a frozen coil can be done by unplugging the unit and allowing the coil to defrost. Then inspect the unit to see if there are signs of dirt and debris buildup. In order for the warm air to begin reaching the coil again, these areas will need to be cleaned.

Unit Cycles On and Off

Damage to the compressor and fan can happen when your AC unit is turned on and off frequently, particularly over a short length of time. Damage is caused by each component being stressed and working harder each time the AC is turned on.

Because acid can accumulate in your unit it is best to have a HVAC pro inspect the unit and do a tune-up.

Weak Airflow

Leaking ducts, vent blockages, low refrigerant, and dirty air filters can cause weak airflow creating cold and hot drafts in your home.

If your thermostat seems faulty, try recalibrating it. Ensure there is no furniture or appliances blocking any vents and make sure to replace or clean all air filters to help with airflow.

Replacement or Repair: Which One Do You Need?

It can be a challenge to decide between an AC repair or a replacement. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when deciding.

AC Service Life Has Reached its Max

All AC units have a service life. Older AC unit models typically last 10-12 years whereas modern models last 15-20 years. If your AC unit’s lifespan is over that timeframe and you’re experiencing problems it may be time for a new unit.

Energy Costs & Consumption

Your air conditioner may be experiencing problems if you notice that your energy bill is high. Newer models tend to be more energy efficient but an inspection can help you choose if a replacement or repair is necessary.

Cost of Repair vs Replacement

When you’re thinking of the cost of a replacement AC and a repair there are a couple of things to consider. A new air conditioner unit can cost between $2,500-$15,000 while the average cost for central AC units ranges from $100-$650 and mini-split repairs range from $750-$900.
