Easy DIY Cleaning Solutions That Actually Work

We know we’re supposed to keep our home clean for obvious health reasons, but how often do any of us stop to think about the cleaning products we’re using? Fresh scents, pretty colors, and nice packaging don’t necessarily mean your cleaning products are safe to use. Home cleaning products often contain harmful chemicals that can dry out your skin or pollute your indoor air.

These natural DIY cleaning solutions are an effective way for spring cleaning your house without harsh or harmful chemicals.

Easy Toilet Bowl and Drain Cleaning Solution

Two simple natural ingredients will do the trick when fighting germs and bacteria in your toilet bowl. Baking soda and vinegar (both found at your local store or online) create a fizz when mixed together. This fizz is great at killing germs. Even better, for a fresh scent, all you need are a few drops of essential oils (just be sure to always read the packaging carefully before use).

For this recipe, all you need is:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of 20% vinegar (use a stronger vinegar for limescale)
  • One teaspoon of essential oil of choice (lemon works well to cut the vinegar smell, but I have also used lavender and tea tree oil with success)
  • A glass bowl
  • A wooden spoon

The method is simple as the ingredients:

Place the baking soda in a glass bowl. Essential oils react with metal and plastic, so a glass container is essential. Add the essential oils to the baking soda and mix thoroughly.

Next, place 1 tablespoon of the mix in the toilet bowl and sprinkle around the sides of the bowl. Add the vinegar and watch it bubble. Swish and scrub with a toilet brush to distribute. Let sit for 15 minutes, then flush away. Your bathroom will be left sparkling clean.

Always remember to check for clogs in your drains and pipes. Always call the experts if you notice a heavily clogged drain or sewer.

Keep Your Kitchen Clean as a Whistle with This Natural Cleaning Solution

Fortunately, there are plenty of natural alternatives that will allow you to clean your kitchen without risking your health or the environment.

The basics of natural kitchen cleaning involve vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Baking soda absorbs odors and is a gentle abrasive that can be used on almost anything. Vinegar kills bacteria, dissolves grease, and removes hard water deposits. Lemon juice is mildly acidic and cuts through grease easily.

These three items should make up the backbone of your natural cleaning products. Mix baking soda with warm water, and you have a product that cleans almost anything.

Your Glass Will Shine with This Spring Cleaning Solution

The last thing you want to do is spray a chemical cleaner on your window, only to have it drip or spray everywhere and possibly kill your plants or damage your window frames.

Luckily, many natural products will clean your windows without all the harsh chemicals. For example, you can make a simple glass cleaning solution at home.

Mix 2 cups water, 1/2 cup white or cider vinegar, and 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol.

If you want to add a little fragrance to this recipe, you can add 1 or 2 drops of orange essential oil for some added odor control.

Put everything into a spray bottle and make those windows shine.

How to Beat Mold and Mildew Without Toxic Chemicals

Mold spores are everywhere, and they’re challenging to kill. They can be found on windowsills, walls, and air ducts. They only need moisture to grow and spread.

While you can use bleach to kill it, you’re still left with a chemical stench and rinsing. So instead, try this natural solution to rid your home of mold and mildew the natural way.

Natural Mold Remover Recipe:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons tea-tree oil
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 24-ounce spray bottle

Combine the water and tea tree oil in the spray bottle. Cover the mold with the solution and leave for 24 hours. Once the 24 hours is up, mix baking soda with some spray solution to form a thick paste. Spread over the mold. Leave for a short while before scrubbing clean with a toothbrush.
