Selecting the Right Water Heater

Before purchasing a water heater for your home, it is important to explore your options and choose a unit that is going to work best for you. For your convenience, our Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers at Adeedo! have put together some helpful information to help you with the process.

First, it’s smart to consult with an expert to determine whether your previous model can be properly fixed. Additionally, if you plan to replace a broken water heater, don’t attempt to replace this appliance without assistance. By having a professional help you in the process, you can ensure proper installation and that everything is safe and up to code.

Proper installation is also necessary to maximize the heater’s energy efficiency. By having your water heater installed by a certified Southern California plumber, you can be confident that it will be done right the first time.

Choosing the Right Heater

Water heaters are usually sold based on their per-gallon capacity. A family of about two to four people generally requires about 85 gallons of water to sustain daily activities. Meeting with one of our Adeedo! plumbers will help you determine what size water heater will best suit your household’s needs.

Types of Water Heaters

  1. Storage tank heaters – If you already have a natural gas service, gas is the preferred type fuel for a storage tank heater. While gas models may be more expensive on the front end, in the long run a gas water heater will cost half as much as electric heaters.
  2. Tankless water heaters– These are suitcase-sized units that heat water only when needed. One benefit of these models is that they do not pose a risk of tank failure and the energy lost by constantly reheating the water. However, these types of water heaters cost more to purchase and install. Generally, they are not not recommended for large households.
  3. Hybrid electric heaters – Hybrid water heaters typically cost more than electric-only models. However, installation generally runs about the same price and the payback period is shorter. The major issue associated with hybrid electric heaters revolves around their fundamental construction and size. Because the heat pump is usually on top, they need a lot of space. For those customers with limited storage areas, hybrid electric heaters may pose a problem.
  4. Solar water heaters – These types of water heaters are an attractive option for warm, sunny areas. They do not function efficiently in climates with lots of cold, cloudy days. Additionally, even with rebates that you will receive after purchase, it can take anywhere from 10 to 30 years before the savings will offset the costs.

No matter what type of water heater you decide on purchasing, make sure to consult with a professional plumber prior to installation. And if you still aren’t sure what unit is right for you, an Orange County or Los Angeles plumber from Adeedo! can help.
