Repiping vs. Relining

Often, our Southern California plumbers are asked about the difference between relining and repiping, and which solution is best. So, we are here to answer those questions! As a homeowner, you’ll also learn if and when you need to have your plumbing lines inspected.

Noticeable warning signs of plumbing line issues include tap water with the look or smell of rust, low water pressure, or continual leaks in one or more areas. Other indicators can be less obvious, but might include:

  • Surface Corrosion or Pinpoint Leaks
  • Burst Pipes or Foundation Leaks
  • Visible Stains or Moldy Surfaces
  • Water Meter Activity When Water Is Turned Off

Repiping
Homes built before 1970 were frequently constructed using galvanized pipes. Over time, galvanized metal rusts from the inside-out, creating problems that homeowners typically don’t realize until the damage is already done. Repiping involves replacing corroded pipes with those made from longer-lasting, more durable copper pipe. Benefits include cleaner, better-tasting water, enhanced water pressure, greater flow, reduced leaking potential and easier maintenance.

Relining
An alternative repair option is to line existing pipes with an epoxy material that creates a new interior surface. Called pipelining, this method seals off leaks and prevents damaged parts of the original pipe to enter the water supply. This method is best suited for non-galvanized sewer systems and one of our Orange County or Los Angeles plumbers can complete the process via trenchless pipelining methods that avoid digging up yards.

While both repiping and relining are proven solutions, the technique used is determined on a case-by-case basis. So, if you believe you need your plumbing lines checked, we can send over a highly skilled Southern California plumber, in no time.
