Top 4 Plumbing Myths Busted

After 70 years in the plumbing industry, Adeedo!’s plumbers have heard quite a few plumbing stories, and while some have been facts, many others have been myths that can often cause harm to your plumbing system and your wallet. So, in order to educate our customers and help them avoid plumbing mishaps, our Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers have compiled a list of a few of the most common plumbing myths we’ve heard, along with the truth about these issues.

Myth: Leaky faucets don’t need to be fixed right away.

Fact: One leaky faucet can cause thousands of gallons of water to be lost each year, which is both hard on the environment and your wallet. And during a time of drought, home- and business-owners are mandated to fix known leaks as quickly as possible. Some leaks aren’t so obvious. To see how to find hidden leaks, click here.

Myth: You can use your toilet as a garbage can.

Fact: Our plumbers deal with overflowing toilets each and every day, and putting items down a toilet that don’t belong is a very common cause of this problem. Toilets are meant to handle human waste along with small amounts of toilet tissue. Non-flushable items such as cotton balls, facial tissue, cotton swabs, paper towels, and hair and feminine hygiene products should be placed into a trash can.

Myth: Lemons and lemon peels can clean your garbage disposal.

Fact: While lemon peels can make a garbage disposal smell fresh, they do not clean it. In fact, peels of any kind should never be placed down the disposal since they can cause stoppages and damage pipes. To make your disposal smell fresh, our Orange County and Los Angeles plumbers suggest placing a small amount of dishwashing detergent down the drain while your hot water is running and your disposal is on.

Myth: You don’t need to worry about your pipes until they are clogged.

Fact: Pipes clog when the situation has become extreme. Therefore, it is important to keep your pipes healthy and clean, and follow best plumbing practices to avoid stoppages.
