How To Lower Heating & Air Conditioning Costs

Adeedo - Maintain your AC

Fact or Fiction? Which of these common recommendations will actually help you keep your home at a happy temperature and save on utility bills?

Fiction! Turning your thermostat waaay up or down will make your home comfortable faster.
Turning the thermostat up or down to much higher or lower temps will not make your home heat up or cool down faster. No matter what the temperature setting is, your HVAC system delivers heating and cooling at the same level.

Fiction! Turning your central air or heat OFF while you are away for the day/evening is a good idea.
Turning your system off when you are not at home will cause the equipment to work harder to get your home back to a comfortable level after you turn it back on (plus you will have to suffer until it gets there!). Instead, we recommend that you use a programmable thermostat to set temperatures when you are away from home 7-10 degrees higher during cooling season (or lower for heating season).

Fact: Programmable thermostats save money. If you set it correctly, a programmable thermostat can save you up to $180 in energy costs each year. EnergyStar.gov recommends a: “10 hour daytime setback of 8° F in winter and setup of 7° F in summer, and an 8-hour nighttime setback of 8° F in winter and a setup of 4° F in summer.”

Fact: You should change the direction your ceiling fans turn in the summer.
Ceiling fans can help in keeping your home comfortable. You can use the settings on the fan to change the direction it spins.  In the winter, clockwise spinning will send the rising warm air down from the ceiling back into the room.  When warmer months come, turn the fan back to counterclockwise rotation. Now is a good time to check which way the fan is set…

Fact: Changing your HVAC filter helps lower utility bills.
We recommend that you change your HVAC filter regularly (at least once a quarter, or more often for some units). With new filters, your equipment will provide cleaner air throughout your home while working more efficiently ( which can save up to 15% on energy costs)!

Fiction! Air Conditioning and Heating systems don’t need maintenance
Not maintaining your heating and air conditioning systems is a lot like neglecting to maintain your car on schedule…the longer you wait the more likely something is to break, costing you more in the long run. Annual maintenance also means it will run more safely & efficiently (lower energy bills) and have a longer lifespan. Plus, most manufacturer warranties require regular maintenance to stay in effect.
